Year means year of manufacture as recorded on the registry. For imports this can differ from the model year.
Registered cars, utes and vans by make, model and year of manufacture, from the federal government's Road Vehicles Australia data (BITRE), as at 31 January 2025.
The same count taken each January from 2022 to 2025. Only cars built up to 2020 are used, so new sales don't look like growth. The 2030 figure assumes the yearly rate continues.
Each spec's share of production, from factory and registry records, applied to the Australian count. This assumes every colour survives and gets imported at the same rate.
Cars on club or historic permits aren't counted. Very small counts are suppressed or adjusted for privacy. Model names are as recorded by state registries.
